Bari is the principal city of Puglia, the southern province in the heel of the Italian boot. Bari, and the whole of Puglia, is now becoming popular with Americans. It is famous for its beaches, wonderful weather, unspoiled countryside, fascinating history, affordable lifestyle, and of course the food.
Many of you saw Stanley Tucci’s episode about Puglia in his CNN series, Searching for Italy. He talked about the cuisine which combines the durham wheat, the vegetables, and olive oil grown in the area with the local fish and meat for the freshest dishes in all of Italy. In fact Puglia is known for the best ingredients, which are shipped around Italy.
The town of Alberobello is famous for its “trulli”, those limestone cone-shaped structures built as early as 1100 A.D., that were used as temporary agricultural field huts or permanent dwellings. Today the approximate 1500 trulli are part of the Alberobello UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) protected cultural site.
I had the pleasure of traveling to Puglia with my cousins to visit family there. I also had the opportunity to meet with fellow eXp Realty colleague, Stefano Berardi, to discuss Americans buying property in Italy Stefano has a background with a mortgage finance company in Bari and now works with eXp Italy.
Stefano introduced us to Giulio D’Arrigo, who is a Tour Guide and Archaeology Expert in the area. They took us on a fabulous walking tour of the historic district of Bari, the principal port city. I would highly recommend a visit!
