Interior Design Trends that are Passé

Interior Design Trends that are Passé

As a Realtor, I often get asked about staging, room arrangements and decorating.  Here are some new trends that I learned and wanted to share.

Design tends to be cyclical and as we move through 2025, several interior design trends are becoming less popular. Of course, classic timeless design will forever remain and period rooms will have their place. Here's a summary of styles that are moving out:

1. All-White Interiors

The once-popular all-white aesthetic is being replaced by warmer, cozier environments. Homeowners are now looking for bold colors, rich textures, and mixed materials to create more personalized and inviting spaces. Cozier rooms will be surfacing.

2. Open Shelving in Kitchens

Open shelving, while initially favored for displaying dishware, is declining due to its impracticality. Dust and clutter accumulation have led many to revert to closed cabinets for a tidy and more visually quiet appearance.

3. Overly Minimalist Design

Extreme minimalism, characterized by bare walls and sparse furniture, is losing appeal. People are now embracing spaces with more personality, warmth, and texture, opting for a more layered and dynamic approach.

4. Faux Finishes

Artificial materials like faux marble, wood, and stone are becoming less popular. Homeowners are increasingly drawn to authentic, sustainable materials that offer durability and a genuine feel.

5. Farmhouse Style

The farmhouse aesthetic, characterized by shiplap walls, barn doors, and rustic accents, is being overshadowed by more contemporary and transitional styles. Refined, clean-lined designs are taking precedence over “ fussy and visually loud” interiors.

6. Gray Color Palettes

The dominance of gray-on-gray interiors is waning. Warmer tones like beige, taupe, and jewel tones are emerging, moving away from the cool, monochromatic palettes that have been prevalent in recent years.  Spaces designed with warm colors are much more inviting.

7. Overly Industrial Aesthetics

Industrial elements such as exposed ductwork and concrete floors are becoming less desirable. People are gravitating toward cozier, softer design choices that feel more livable.

8. Matching Furniture Sets

The trend of perfectly matched furniture sets is gone. Today, eclectic and curated looks featuring complementary pieces rather than identical ones are visually more interesting. Mixing textures, colors, and styles adds a dynamic approach and interest to a space.

9. Mixed Hue walls

The trend is leaning toward cohesive color schemes. Homeowners prefer a consistent flow of color throughout a room.

10. Over Sized Light Fixtures

While statement lighting remains popular, fixtures that feel out of scale are being replaced by more sculptural designs.

These shifts reflect a broader desire for comfort, authenticity, and self-expression in living spaces.
